Change is necessary. The University of Houston in Victoria has been toying with the notion of upgrading its status to a four year university.

Tanner Mckibbon, a student at both UHV and Victoria College, said, "It would be good for the University to become a four year institution because it would help the surrounding area around the college become nicer."

At this point in time, UHV is a commuter institution. If the University would so choose to become a four year institution the students will need housing on campus, additional places to study and places to socialize.

Julie Mclarry, also a student at UHV and Victoria College, agrees with Mckibbon.

"When the school expands and changes its status, then everything around it will have to change," said Mclarry.

The reaction by students to the whole situation seemed almost neutral. The main question that was asked from many of the students was "How does this affect me? How will I benefit from the change in status of the university?"

The true benefits that are associated with a change in status if the university are yet to be known.

The Victoria Advocate reported that the City of Victoria has launched a joint effort with UHV to see if the proposed expansion will be mutually beneficial to both the city and to the university.

It is also important that the university takes into consideration its sister school, The Victoria College. Because of its long lasting relationship these two entities have been able to coexist for over 15 years.

All of these elements will be incorporated into the study that is in the works to help determine the future of the University and, more importantly, the future of the community that surrounds it.
